Music Education

With Areas in Vocal/Choral and Instrumental

Entrance into the Music Education Major

To enter the Music Education major, the student is required to pass an entrance audition in the chosen applied area. This may take place prior to the student attending the college or at the student's first semester jury (see "Special Requirements" below). Audition appointments should be made with the Music Department chairperson prior to registration for the student's first semester. If the student is unable to audition on-site, the student may present a tape or CD for his audition. The student should present at least two pieces of contrasting style, classical or sacred, for his audition.

The student must score a minimum of 20 on the ACT test (or SAT equivalent) to be accepted into the Music Education major. If the student's score is less than 20, they have one year to receive help, retake the test, and achieve an acceptable test score to enter the program.

At the end of the student's sophomore year, he is required to complete and turn in an application and reference form to be allowed to complete the remainder of the Music Education course of study.

Purpose

To equip godly men and women to teach music in Christian elementary and secondary schools.

Objectives

  • That the student develop in his life the Christian character and qualifications necessary for a teaching ministry that gorifies God.
  • That the student acquire competency in musicianship, leadership, conducting, and personal performance.
  • That the student develop a personal philosophy of music based on biblical principles that will become the basis for his teaching ministry.
  • That the student acquire skills necessary to teach music effectively in a Christian day school on both the elementary and secondary levels.

Certification

The Music Education graduate receives a certificate which allows him to teach in any ACSI school (Association of Christian Schools International). He does not receive teaching certification from the State of Missouri. The Music Education curriculum lines up with, meets, and exceeds all of the requirements for music education as stated by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education of the State of Missouri.

Special Requirements

The Bachelor of Music degree is a five-year program of study. All Music Education majors are required to participate in MUMC Calvary Masterworks Chorus which performs a major sacred classical work at least every other year. They are also required to take MUGR General Recital each semester they take lessons at Calvary.

The Music Education major must choose an emphasis of either K-12 Vocal/Choral or K-12 Instrumental. A student may choose to add courses from the other emphasis to be prepared in both areas.

Music Jury: every semester the student must take private lessons on his primary instrument. The non-keyboard major must pass the piano proficiency test. This usually takes place after two semesters of piano lessons. The student is required to continue taking piano lessons each semester until he passes the proficiency test. Keyboard majors take Hymn Playing and Accompanying. At the end of the second year of instruction for the student's primary instrument, a Sophomore Platform Exam must be passed. The College Basic Academic Subject Exam (CBASE) must be passed at the end of the sophomore year or early in the junior year. The music section of the Praxis II test must be passed before or during the student's last semester. A Senior Recital Check takes place on the student's primary instrument 6-8 weeks before his senior recital.

The Music Education major must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.75 and no grade lower than 2.0 in all professional music and education courses.

To graduate from the Music Education major, a student must complete the minimum requirement of 8 semesters of Christian Ministry. Two semesters must be aiding a music teacher in an elementary and secondary music classroom. Student Teaching may be used for the student's final Christian Ministry assignment. The Music Education student is strongly urged to use most or all of the remaining Christian Ministry assignments in educational settings: church, school, teaching, directing, if possible. These experiences should also be included in the student's portfolio.

The Music Education student must keep a log of all experiences that include teaching, leading, observing, aiding, directing in a classroom or other setting that involves one or more of these.

It is recommended that Music Education majors take some general education or Bible courses in the summer to lighten their load during the school year. The Music Education program is designed to be completed in 4.5 years. A student that takes enough courses in the summer can complete the Music Education major in four years. A student could also choose to lighten his load and stretch the program to five years or more. See the Calvary Music Major Manual for additional information and requirements. The student should be familiar with the requirements so that he may be sure to meet them.
